[An infinite, featureless white space in which one can wander indefinitely in any given direction, only to end up in the exact same place where they began?
[How long has it been, since Sunny left Faraway Town and everything he'd always known behind? To Basil, it felt like...too long. Decades. The reality was that it had only barely been a year, just enough time for things to start to settle back into normalcy, but only just.
As much as they all missed him, the year had been spent as much needed time to heal. None of them had received proper closure for what had happened to Mari, between the secrets and the lies...though, the truth hadn't left them faring much better. Both Omori and Basil had been young enough at the time that they would never be seriously charged, but the consequences would still come in the form of the ripple effects it would have throughout their friendgroup. Basil would feel that first-hand, because even though he knew that Aubrey, Kel, and Hero would eventually forgive them (and they did, and do), that sort of revelation is not something you forget. The weight taken off Basil's shoulders is worth everything though, even if it means weathering the fact that things would never really be the same again.
Not that things were good before.
But...they were better now. Hero went back to college not long after Sunny left, leaving Kel, Aubrey, and Basil to go back to their normal lives at home. Basil would actually start leaving his home more, returning to school much to the delight of Polly. But perhaps the most uplifting of all- for him- would be his slow re-connection with Aubrey, who had spent so many years treating her former friend badly over a situation she didn't have all of the context for. He'd even gone back to tending to his flowers, which had returned to a fuller bloom in the front yard than he'd seen them in years. Fitting, as they tended to be a reflection of Basil anyway.
Imagine his surprise, then, when Kel came exploding into his bedroom (hi he loves you but please knock next time his heart can't take that) telling him that Sunny would be coming home for a visit that weekend. "That weekend" being towards the end of the year, with everyone on break for the Winter with snow on the ground, meaning Basil doesn't actually have any nice flowers to show right now...barring the ones he keeps indoors, anyway. And, well, just because Sunny moved away doesn't mean his mom has suddenly turned into a stellar parent overnight- though rumor had it she was trying to be better- meaning that Sunny was on this trip back by himself. Possibly choosing to spend his break in Town? Hmm...
That's when Basil learns from Polly that Sunny would be coming to stay with them after she'd talked it over with Sunny's mom, and it truly leaves him feeling a way he can't describe. Excited? Nervous? Scared? All of the above, especially when Kel demands they both go meet him at the bus stop despite the fact it's been snowing since this morning.
[It's probably a good thing that Sunny left. At times, he's thought of himself as selfish, confessing his sins only to leave everyone else holding them. He's been told that he's forgiven, and he doesn't really think that that can be true, but he appreciates that his friends still love him enough to try. If he were still in Faraway, living along side them every day, it probably wouldn't be so easy. He thinks he's become something people can only stomach in small doses, and he thinks he's accepted that.
[He's tried. It's better than being alone, which he still is, sometimes. He thinks he's more grown up now - thought maybe he'd find a hotel in the city, but then remembered how big the city was.
[His mother came to him with plans already made, and though he'd wanted to, he couldn't argue them with her. Maybe he shouldn't want to. Everything has been settled, and that dark night in Basil's room was just a dark night...
[And that dark night in Sunny's backyard was just--
[Calm down. Focus. The bus is coming to a stop, and it smells like his home town outside. He steps off and into the snow, boots pressing down patterns in the fluff. He sees Kel, and his heart warms; sees Basil, and his heart jumps; searches for Aubrey, and his heart hurts. He wonders if she didn't want to see him...]
Hi...
[His voice has gotten just a little deeper; he has a clean white patch over his right eye.
[And, of course, he's swept up and squeezed by Kel immediately, then deposited back on his feet with a stumble. The taller boy immediately begins to chatter, but Sunny's eyes go to Basil instead. He thinks he'll never be sure of what to say again.]
[Honestly, it was probably less that she didn't want to see him, and more that it was pretty short notice in terms of how visits go. Her situation dictates that it's not always easy to just leave unannounced...but more likely than not, she'll drop by to see him as soon as she's able.
Basil, at least visually, hasn't changed a crazy ton...but Sunny might notice that he looks better than he did before. His posture is less guarded, and the bags under his eyes aren't quite as heavy, like he's actually gotten a full night's sleep lately. That shyness is still ever present, which...when they were younger it wasn't around their friends, but as he got older and their situation grew complicated, so too did his emotions.
Honestly, having Kel here to act as a bit of a social buffer is immensely helpful. It means that Basil can stay on the sidewalk for a moment longer while Kel greets Sunny, watching him over their mutual friend's shoulder.
It isn't long before their eyes meet, and Basil feels his heart seize. Oh, his eye...he's used to seeing it, but it's been so long that it hurts all the more to be reminded of it. Poor Sunny.]
[There are probably people who would call Sunny insane for coming anywhere near the person who put him in an eyepatch. There are probably people who would call Sunny insane for a lot of reasons.
[Kel is already jostling them into walking before Sunny can answer. He chews for a moment on nothing. Basil has gotten better at sleeping, and Sunny has gotten (marginally) better at speaking, but...it seems more difficult than it has in a while, suddenly...]
[Oh! They're on the move already...Basil gathers himself up, his fingers fidgeting with the edge of his jacket as he walks along with Sunny and Kel back up the street. He tries his best to walk with them, as in side-by-side, instead of allowing himself to fall back into the habit of lagging behind them.]
I can imagine...
[Long bus ride, not much to do other than think...Basil knows he'd probably go insane, assuming he didn't just fall asleep first.
Now, can he think of something better to ask than "so how's the weather where you're living?"]
Well, um! At least you're here now, right? And you made it safe, which is good...
[He glances briefly at Kel, as if silently hoping he'll think of something more interesting to say because he's floundering and it's only been thirty seconds.]
[Luckily, Kel is always chattering about something. He jostles Sunny again, listing off all the things they'll do together. Sunny quietly reminds him that he's only here for a couple of days, and then...
['You're staying at Basil's place, right?'
[Sunny looks to his friend. He knows the answer, but...would rather let Basil give it, for whatever reason...
